Car Importation Kenya 2024

Here’s the latest on car importation to Kenya as of January 8, 2024:

Major changes effective January 1st, 2024:

  • Age limit: Only used cars registered from January 1, 2017, onwards are allowed for import. Any vehicle registered in 2016 or earlier will be rejected. This deadline was strict, so ensure any pre-2017 imports arrived by December 31st, 2023.
  • Steering wheel: All imported vehicles must be right-hand drive. The ban on left-hand drive vehicles applies to everyone, including returning residents, diplomats, and the general public.

Other important points to remember:

  • Roadworthiness: All imported vehicles must undergo a roadworthiness inspection by a KEBS-appointed agent in the country of export.
  • Taxes and duties: Import duties range from 25% to 35% depending on the engine capacity and fuel type. Excise duty and VAT also apply.
  • Compliance with KS 1515:2000: The imported vehicle must meet Kenya Bureau of Standards requirements regarding safety and environmental standards.
  • Clearing agent: Consider hiring a licensed clearing agent to navigate the customs clearance process and paperwork.
